Default Interesting Flower

This plant did not have a name when I ordered it from Hawaii two years ago but it does now. It is called Bulbophyllum Wilbur Chang (echinolabium x carunculatum). This is the twelfth flower it has produced since it made the first one in July. The flower is eight inches long, has a hinged lip that flaps back and forth in a breeze and attracts blowflies with the odor of carrion. I find it very interesting. Most Bulbophyllums are small but not this one.

Its a very attractive flower-do you keep it under glass or just put up with the smell?

I think that the foul scent is common among Bulbophyllum. Names like odoratissimum and putidum are trying to tell you something. You don't really smell them though unless you get within about a foot or two of the flower.

Very cool looking bulbo and thats a great, crisp picture you have! What type of camera are you using? Wilbur Chang is also a member of my orchid society. Its pretty cool that his cross has ended up as far away as FLA!

What an impressive flower, Jerry. It looks like it would be worth holding your breath to get a really good look at it.

I love the color and shape of this one, but I can't stand stinkers! So that's one I'll never own. Too bad, it's a beauty otherwise.
