Default A yellow Hamlyn’s Magic?

I got a second Bc. Hamlyn’s Magic ‘Leilani’(first was from the end of year party 2 weeks ago)from my local orchid society’s raffle tonight—I just gravitated towards the yellow flower and didn’t even realize what it was until I checked the tag. Personally, I’m thrilled—I think it has MORE character precisely because it isn’t as colorful as its siblings!

After looking through a bunch of pictures of different siblings posted by different vendors and enthusiasts, I can’t seem to find one quite like what I’ve got—could this plant have been mislabeled or could I really have gotten an odd “var. aurea” type of Hamlyn’s Magic?

What are your opinions? Thanks in advance!

Spent bloom compared to the new one

The archetype—spent bloom looked like this.

That looks similar to that Ep. Nocturnum. But that’s my poor eye site.

Looking at images in Orchid Wiz, that is a highly variable cross.

There are so many factors, most of which are unknown to the breeder, that influences the outcome of any cross - even when breeding with 2 species, that color predictions are at best an educated guess.

In this case, B. nodosa color is fairly uniform.
On the other side, one grandparent is red (milleri), while the other (guttata) can have a wide range of background colors.

If the guttata was bred from parents with different colors (could be yellow, green or brown), the offspring will have genetics that could support just about anything.

Edit: Just found out that there are two color forms of C. milleri. One is blood red, the other orange-red. I have not found any records of a flava (true yellow) color form, but the orange-red version can likely be diluted towards yellow.

Thank you for your input, Fairorchids—a lot of people around me have Hamlyn’s Magic and they’re all on the pink side, so I felt like I stumbled upon a novelty!

For what it’s worth, I feel like this could be a useful plant for my personal breeding purposes—I like it!

Thanks for checking that out, Ray—one day I will subscribe to Orchid Wiz, but that’s a steep price to justify with a collection as small as mine!
