Inherited Collection with issues, I need help identifying what!
Default Inherited Collection with issues, I need help identifying what!

Hello. I have inherited a collection of 20 phals and im not sure if i should keep them. They have been rather neglected for at least 6 months and have many leaf issues. I have spent a week now on Google trying to learn all I can but I believe maybe photos of my issues would be better. Believing google the plants each have 10 different things wrong with them. I have spent this morning with a magnifying glass and spotted what I think to be soil mites but that is the only live thing I saw. I am not worried about ugly plants but I can't decide if I have thrips, spider mites or it is just damage and neglect with the watering.. There are new leaves coming and many nice bright green roots so at the moment the plants seem healthy enough. Thank you.

The bad leaf pattern on plant #1 is on several plants but the plants have new large leaves above them.

Generally, they look pretty good to me. The brown stuff appears to be scarring from mechanical damage, so is done. The plant will lose those leaves eventually anyway.

Hard to say for sure, but that third photo looks like mite damage - could be active or already eradicated.

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

The photos look much better than I was expecting after what you wrote. They should all survive and do well.

Read about Phals here. From the left yellow menu choose Forums then Beginners. Near the top look at the sticky thread The Phal. abuse ends here.

Next, from Forums select Phalaenopsis-Hybrids. At the top look at the stick thread on growing Phals.

Welcome to the Orchid Board, Rockabilly! I hope the posters ahead of me have put your mind at ease. I do not see anything seriously wrong. That real bad leaf in a couple of the photos appears to have old mechanical damage, with the scars to show for it. It's an older leaf that will eventually dry up naturally and fall off.

I second the advice to check out the sticky thread, "The Phal Abuse Stops Here." Don't be put off by the title; it's full of helpful advice to those new to growing Phalaenopsis orchids.

If, going forward, you can provide these plants proper care and culture, meaning water, fertilizer, light, humidity, etc., you should do well. Be sure to learn how to repot properly when they are ready for that.

Please feel free to ask more questions and post more photos.
