In nature they grow in loose leaf litter under trees, not in soil. A lot of "terrestrials" are like that. They will often crawl across the surface of moss or other light, airy media. Soil is too dense/not enough air.

Don't soak the sphagnum. Just run water briefly over the top so it winds up a little moist.
