Sunken brown spots on phaelanopsis leaves
Default Sunken brown spots on phaelanopsis leaves

I’ve noticed some dry, sunken, mottled spots on the leaves of two of my phaelanopsis orchids. On a couple of the leaves, the spot was surrounded by yellow, so I initially thought it was a sunburn, now I’m not so sure. Any thoughts on potential causes or treatments?

The damage at the edges is likely from mechanical erosion - rubbing against something.

The sunken areas appear to be remnants of mesophyll collapse - the surface cells literally collapsed due to a significant disruption. Often, that happens when hitting the sun-warmed leaves with cold water.

Al of the damage looks old, and there is nothing that can be done to repair it, so just avoid it in the future.
