For a tropical environment, Cattleya violacea might work well for you. (Outside of the tropics, it can be a challenge because it wants lots of heat and humidity - conditions that you have in abundance) Also Cattleya dowiana and its hybrids like(s) warmth. A note... Cattleyas do need to dry out between waterings (so mounted, or in an inorganic medium such as volcanic rock, may be what you need) For Catts, overwatering is much worse than underwatering! Also many Catts do experience seasonal drying and cooling to some extent - you can look up information about species here: Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia. Look for species that come from low elevation (500 meters or less) at tropical latitudes, these are going to be the ones that need warmth and humidity without a lot of seasonal change.

GD, something I noticed in your original statement that no one else has responded to, is that you plan on watering the cattleya 2 to 3 times per day.
In your environment for a vanda that is not in a pot that may be just fine, that is how I grow mine. I have not grown a cattleya without potting medium, yet, so I cannot comment on that type of environment. For a cattleya in a pot, with the wrong medium that would be detrimental to it's health. Over watering an Orchid is the most dangerous thing you can do, believe me I know. Happy growing |
