Oncidium 'Sweet Sugar' care and repotting
Default Oncidium 'Sweet Sugar' care and repotting

Hi,
I got a beautiful Oncidium (or Gomesa) 'Sweet Sugar' as a present, it's a plant from Karge Orchideen and looks quite healthy.
I read everywhere that Oncidiums need it wet, but this species has a large background of O. varicosum and I guess it likes to have it dryer. I wonder if I should treat it as if it was a Cattleya. If so, I would like to repot it in a basket.
Looking forward to hear your experiences.
Thanks!
Tango.

I grow a few of this hybrid and it’s relatives. The way it is currently potted looks just about perfect to me.

The only difference between it and mine is that I wind a few strands of sphagnum moss through the top layer of the mix, which allows it to dry out a little more slowly when I am too busy to water.

Hi ArronOB
Thanks for sharing.
So they should be actually kept wet.
Then better not to move to basket, I guess?

I grow this. It gets quite large and a basket is not the best idea. IMO. I have mine in a heavy clay pot, or set your pot of choice in a heavy pot so it doesn't tip. I have mine in moss and keep it perpetually damp. I water when the moss is crispy on top. I have it under catt light but, it would grow and flower with less. It's become a beast in a couple years.

Hehe good to know. I hope mine also gets big with time
Ok so no baskets.
What about the medium?
Medium bark plus sphagnum for instance?

I have mine in moss mix and a clay pot. When I'm able I mix my moss mix about a quarter bark and three quarters moss. I keep it moist. When it's crispy on top, I water because down in the pot, it's still moist.
