I use clear plastic pots exclusively for all of my Phals. I prefer the ones that have not only holes on the bottom but also slots on the sides. Roots come freely out the bottom and also manage to snake their way through those little side slots, too. It's why I end up having to cut the pot off when I repot. But I do like being able to see the roots, and also knowing that some of the roots are receiving direct light that way, too.
So I may not understand the whys of it, but in my experience, Phal roots just like to grow and expand outward in all directions, up, down, and sideways, and I don't mind a bit.
