Peristeria elata, where to find one?

Jeez, Ludwig has some horror stories!! Ill stick to just ordering from here in Hawaii thank you! Speaking of which, Exotic Orchids of Maui (Exotic Orchids of Maui:), a very well respected nursery here in Hawaii, has elata seedlings for $7. Wilk Orchids (Orchid List Page 2) has blooming size plants very very cheap (this is where I got my 2 beauties!) and Kawamoto Nurseries (Seedling Odds & Ends - www.KawamotoOrchids.com) has them for a little more.

Thanks----I was going to order from Angelstreet Orchids (sorry folks for recommneding them--do not order from them unless you live in Maui) until I realize that I was going to be ripped off by shipping charges 15%+another 8.00 or so dollars with a 40.00 minium order---that would come to nearly 60.00 to send to the mainland where I live. I wonder what they charges would have been to send to Guam USA where I use to live?. I am no fool and have grown orchids since I was 14 and despise folks who try to play the hoity-toity snob rich mans appeal to me. People who have it do not have to show it off.

I have withdrawn the order I was going to place and am taking your advice. Carter and Holmes however are very reputable people. I have been to their Greenhouses and have bought plants from them.

If you notice, Angelstreet tends to have the same orchids as EOoM, but for a higher price! I think they buy from EOoM and then mark up the price a bit.

I actually found a really nice sized one (6 pseudo bulbs about the size of a fist) from EFG orchids! It's a gorgeous plant ..well, to me at least.
The whole CITES story is sad...at least the plants are still alive . I got a little flack for finding a Mexipedium xerophytum, recently. The guy grew them from seed, so, again, the chicken and egg crazies! Thanks for the info. I do want to try flasking again, soon. Right now, I am in the midst of my dissertation research/writing...aka I have no life ! Maybe I can order a pod when I am done in ~10 months!! If successful, I know I would have to share the wealth!

Last browsing, I notice that Exotic Orchids of Maui has (probably seedling) P. elatas, I think they were less than $10.
Well, growing orchids teaches you patience!

I understand . Grad school takes most of one's time. I have never worked so hard before and I thought I was being loaded down with impossible loads when I was in Grad school. However, all work and no play make Jack and Jill very dull people. Take time for yourself and get some seed---grow it. Seed packets are generall less than 10 bucks at most and most times under.5.00. I got permission from the Dean to use the lab to do mine.
However, just think--once you are through Grad school ---you can get a good job that will allow you to indulge in Orchids to your heart's content.

You may have bought a "Dove Orchid" since your last post.
Just to let you know that I found one, online, at "Hausermann" in a 6 inch pot for $50.00. I just bought one myself. Good luck.

Thank you, Danie! Yes, I actually bought one from Hausermann's too! The plant came in a package that was ~ 1.5 meters tall!! The plant is now in a very large pot in the middle of my greenhouse floor. The leaves along the edges have recently started getting yellow splotches. It's only on the older leaves and I am thinking it might have been the white fly infestation I suffered as the spring began.... The plant has put on three new growths this spring !! I hope it will bloom someday! Good luck to you!

Oh, great! Hum....I don't have a green house just a very bright set of windows looking to the west!
Do you think this will be good enough for this "Dove Orchid"! Now I worry. But I am very happy that you finally got your dream orchid.

If my memory serves, France is very sunny and warm in the summer and fall. According to Jay Pfahl's IOSPE website, P. elata likes it shady and warm. Here's a link to describe the conditions, so you can be ready!!
