Phaius? orchids
Hello!
I walked past a florist and noticed they had an orchid, but I didn't know what kind it was. It appeared to be in a terrestrial orchid- type mix. After coming home, I google "terrestrial orchid"... from what I read, it was probably a Phaius orchid.
Are these hard to grow? (in the home) also, are they difficult to find? otherwise I may have to go back and get it
thanks!!

I know they do really well in the sandy soil of Florida. I bought one for my Mom last time I visited and she planted it along the side of her home - under the carport.
The thing had tripled in size in the last year, and is 4 feet tall!
I have one in S/H in my GH, but it gets too much sun.

They're rather easy to grow in pots but they do get pretty big. From what I understand, they take variable lighting but do best in a shaded area. My large Phaius tankervilleae gets what amounts to triple filtered afternoon light only and it's very happy.

They are easy. Bright, defused light. East or west window. Feed every 2-3 waterings with half strength Miracle grow from late summer/early spring through fall. Keep soil moist but not soggy.

Phaius are very easy to grow. They grow wild in hawaii.
Plant them in a MEDIUM pot but make sure they have good drainage or the delicate bulbs will rot
also, be careful when trimming off stems or leaves
they are very susceptible to fungus and rot.If you are going to buy a Phaius, I would suggest Phaius tankervillaea a.k.a nun orchid it is the easiest to grow and the most rewarding.

I have two Phaius Orchids. They are both Tankervillae. One is Phaius Tankervillae Grandiflora. This is the Nuns orchid that can grow to 3 ft. The other is Phaius Tankervillae Mishmense which comes from Northern India. The Mishmense is a much smaller plant. Bother are easy to grow. The Grandiflora is offered by a lot of growers. The Mishmense not so common.
