Cyms are root machines. When I can't get the roots loose, I give the root ball a good bath with a hose, nozzle set to "stream" to get some force. That washes out anything that is broken down and icky, any medium that survives the washing I figure is OK, but it opens things up a bit.

Sharry Baby. I soaked for 15 minutes but couldn’t loosen the roots so I just cleaned up the top by removing the old moss and dropped the whole thing in a 6” in pot with new orchiata bark.

Actually, Oncidium. Those can be root machines too.

Root Porn Neofinetia Style
Neofinetia Falcata 'Taiga' 大河
You can also see the damage where a deer ate all the white variegate leaf parts off this orchid last fall. Oddly, it was only the leaves with tiger variegation, and only this one Neofinetia.
Neofinetia falcata 'Hōmeiden' 豊明殿
This is one of my favorites. I love the white nakafu variegation display, which is especially pronounced in the spring.
