Willow is a source of aspirin, as I recall. Or at least the active ingredient. Are you saying that the chemistry helped? Neat idea, if so.

Interesting, but it might not be the chemistry. Willow roots very, very easily,, and if it releases rooting hormone into the water, that might do it.

Willows have naturally occurring rooting compounds.

Yeah, but are they exceptionally high? That would be interesting.

I don't know the specific compounds, but I've read multiple places that you can take willow cutting and soak them in water till it turns brownish. Then you can put cuttings in that water and they'll do much better than with water alone. I've never thought of doing it with orchids. I wonder if there is anything released in the water than the orchids could overdose on. Like how you're not supposed to use full strength fertilizer if you fertilize often.

I took a few old dendrobium canes, put them in classic orchiata, stuck them outside, and now I have 3 new canes shooting up. I keep it quite moist, and water every 2 days. I potted in a small 2 inch pot

Interesting. Have you seen those devices that use aeroponics to get cuttings started? I am goig to have a try at building one. I reckon I can do it for 60 to 80 euros, whereas buying them they are hundreds.

You can do a small one for much less. A plastic storage container with holes you cut in the lid. A small aquarium water pump. Drip irrigation spray emitters and flexible irrigation tubing. It's 1/4 inch diameter in the US, 6-7mm.
And for those who like to root cuttings in water, use an aquarium air pump and tubing to bubble air through the water, and change the water frequently. This greatly reduces growth of harmful microorganisms.
