Slc. Dreamcatcher -- any chance of surviving?

I ordered an Slc. Dreamcatcher online from an orchid nursery and someone thought this one was ok to send. Go figure. Leaves are seriously dessicated, only one green tipped root; pretty bad shape as pics show. I'd welcome input regarding what kind of intensive care might give this plant a shot, once you get finished at my optimism

hi Beth, sorry, I am not advanced yet to give any suggestions, just wanted to say, this is really a shame if some orchid seller shipped such a plant. I do order online a lot - in last 45 days I did order probably 25 plants already - and in most cases, except one, I always received perfect, much better looking plant than expected. even the one that came yesterday and was much smaller than described and pictured, was still in great condition, and after I contacted the seller, she explained I had that bad luck to be stacked with the last one and she sent me partial refund. I do not return my plants also, so I do understand if you want to fight for this baby to live, however I would definitely contact seller and let him know this is not ok to do, for future customers not to be screwed like you, sorry to say. Good luck, I hope someone can help you with this one.

Contact the grower. That's unacceptable to ship a plant to a customer in that condition.

I always leave cattleyas bare root until I see signs of new roots. If you have a glass or jar that you can suspend it in without the roots touching the bottom. Put some wet sphagnum or wet hydroton in the bottom of the glass with a little water. The plant should not touch it. the moss or hydoton will add surface area so the water will evaporate more quickly and add humidity to the root area. If you have a rooting hormone product like KLN or a seaweed extract product, use that on the root area once a week. Mist it every day if possible. Eventually you should see new roots starting. Then gently plant it in a very small pot.

Tucker, do you mind educating me on the use of KLN in this situation? What concentration, how to apply and anything else you think relevant.

I'm not experienced enough to give proper advice....just wanted to say good luck... does it have a new shoot growing? There might be hope of new roots and a recovery if that's the case. If I were you I'd definitely complain to the vendor. That is unacceptable.

Beth, I don't use KLN. I use another product called Maxicrop Liquid Seaweed. Both products have plant growth hormones that stimulate root growth. If you have KLN just use it according to the label. I use Maxicrop at one ounce per gallon of water about every two weeks. But if I have a plant with no roots, I'll mist the root area with the product once a week and mist the root area with plain water every day or two. By the way, you don't need to mix a gallon. The little hand sprayers from Home Depot are about a quart so you can use 1/4 of the amount stated on the label with those sprayers to mist the plant. Once you see some roots you can start using a little fertilizer also.
