White fuzzy mold from contact with charcoal?

It seems with my phals, where a root touches charcoal it starts to develop white fuzzy mold around the root. Anyone ever run into this?

Maybe my charcoal is funky? Its a fresh bag no more then 6 months old, always sealed up.

I use charcoal in my mix but I've never experienced that problem.

Charcoal acts like a filter and eventually it absorbs as much mineral deposits as it can hold, and the excess shows up as a white deposit, much like you see on clay pots. The question is, is your medium too old, or too heavily fertilized?
