What is this

I just repoted my new orchid and when I took it out of the pot all over the roots was this web like stuff. What is it?

In some pics I think I see some fuzzies on the roots. In pics 5 & 6 I see what I think is the remains of some old sponge-type rooting medium, maybe from the first potting. I could be wrong, but I think I have seen such used before. How long have you had it and have you re-potted it before?
One way or the other, it doesn't hurt to dip plants in fungicide before you re-pot - this way, you know all the crown and roots are saturated well.

Not really sure what it is you are referring to. I agree that there appears to be evidence of a previous medium still attached, including what looks like insulation egg crate (used in sound rooms and with some modification used in mass media sometimes to raise orchids). Depending upon age, it just be somewhat tough but crumble under pressure, though sometimes they are just more soft and flexible.

My thoughts exactly Paul Mc! Could not remember what the material was that I saw once, but that is it - soundproofing.

Pha or paphiopedilum? The webs could be from an aerobic fungus like mycorhizia which forms weblike structures and is normal in a finer media. Does no harm. Of it could be small spiders or even spidermites. I agree that a dip in a fungicide/bacteriacide solution when brought home might be good. The roots look to be ok althlough the leaves look a little weak. What are you planning to pot it into?

It is a phal and I have it potted in phalaenopsis montery imperial orchid mix from repotme.com . It could be spider mites but I did not see any signs of them other then the web so I was thinking maybe little spiders.
