I've found it at, both, lowe's and Walmart, and would wager that Home Depot carries it as well.

Make sure you ask around the garden center and if you get no luck asking for "Lava rock", try "pumice"

Sounds strange to me:
1) smell
2) could get hot in summer
3) heavy?
4) natural rubber? or chemical, this one can leech chemicals

Rubber could be OK, although if your growing your orchids good in the mix that you use then there's no need to switch to it.

The problem with rubber mulch is with the toxic metals & other chemicals it releases over time. Do a "Google" search and you will find long articles with the pro/cons of rubber mulch. I would not trust it on my orchids with the information I read. Hopes this helps.
