I think I might have to get one and try. I'm in the same area as you Susanne. Do you grow it outside on a screened porch? I'm in Jax and I have most of mine outside on my back porch.

We had a room built off the west end of the screenroom/lanai, the Vanilla is in that room.
I do have chids out on the lanai but the majority of them are in the room

Tyler, have you done any work on this yet? I'd love to see how it's coming along. I was thinking of the same thing, as I've got two cuttings growing like weeds with nothing for them to climb. I'm a sucker for automated watering, too.

I am growing a Vanilla Planiflora per Suzanne's instructions and it is growing like a weed! It crawled up to the top of the tree fern totem and is now crawling back down again. Roots are hanging out everywhere. It is being misted when I remember and watered almost every day. I am getting ready to cut some off to root for a friend. Carol

Wow....tonnes of responses. lol

I did the search for orchid trees. Some great ideas there...particularly from the person who attached pieces of cork around an aluminum frame. The end result looked great. I'm not sure how well moss would grow on the cork surface, but it gave me some great ideas.

Ray - The epiweb/pump is a great idea. I never even considered adding in an active watering system. I want to make this thing somewhere between 7' and 8' tall, so that might be necessary. Wicking won't work from that height, and spraying all that manually would be a pain. Epiweb would certainly make it last longer too. Is Magnus A.'s post pretty much what you were referring to?

Epiphile - I have not started work on it yet, but I'm going to have to soon. It was a two foot vine when I bought it earlier this summer. Currently sitting on a 6' shelf it's already touching the floor. Hopefully I can move forward with it this weekend. I'll try to take some photos of what I'm doing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming of you have more.

Tyler

Way cool!!!
I really love what you've done with it

How did you craft the "vines" that I see?

I'd heard (and maybe this has been brought up already in this thread) of people coiling steel wire in an almost spring-like fashion and training the vine to grow around and around in such a way that the vine can get very long (mature enough to bear "fruit", I suppose) in a smaller amount of space. I was thinking of giving this a go and using irrigation soaker tubing the length of the wire in order to moisten it some.

I love the Epi/Ecoweb displays as well (how could I not?), but it is a little cost-prohibitive for the size required/wanted.
