Whiterabbit, all is not completely lost yet with your phal that developed crown rot. Keep it on the dry side and expect to get a couple of kikis develop on the old stump. It may take several months but they will usually keiki.

Thanks Jerry! Yeah I figured as long as roots looked good I would continue to care for it - thanks for the tip about keeping it a bit dry - I'll try that

I recently Pro-mix, and it isn't peat moss or soil, like many threads say it is. In fact, I got some large chunks of bark and a little bit of perlite.
Also, does the bark actually have Mycorrhizae fungus? I wanted to soak the bark a little because it does seem to have a little bit of peat covering the chunks. Would soaking the bark harm the supposed fungus?

I love rockwool, I put it in everything, from tomatoes and strawberries to draculas and masdevallias. Of course, I make special blends of it with other ingredients suited for the use.

Since the poll allows only a single selection I cannot respond to it. I use bark, bark with sphagnum, bark with perlite, sphagnum only or leca or other inert materials depending on several factors.

My growing conditions, and within it, tbe habits and requirements of individual specimens observed and "registered' in my brain over time, dictate my choice of potting media.
It's....a Journey!

potting media
my plants are under shade cloth & trees. Impossible to get good quality bark here, chc has been a total disaster here with our high rainfall. Am now using the crushed shells of macadamia nuts. Our climate here in S. Africa, near Duban is sub tropical, rain can fall at any time, drier in winter. Phals indoors in glass vases with water & very dilute feeding.

I use many different media. I mostly mount in wood sticks, wood planks, bark, some tree fern, have some baskets with nothing, rocks, bark/perlite/moss, pure moss, pots with bark, bark/perlite, bark-moss, moss. It just depends ...
