Where in California are the orchids located? I'm fairly certain that the Orchid Society of Southern California would be happy to raffle them off to support our society.

This is a situation that none of us can escape and we should seriously be thinking of the next step for our cherished orchid collections should such an event occur. These are hard cold facts that require planning ahead and responsible actions to assure that the orchid plants would survive and flourish to be appreciated by other generations.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, Lilavati.

I think handing them off to an orchid society would definately be a good idea; failing that you could always post an auction on eBay where buyers would only have to pay shipping. Posting an ad in the Classifieds section of OB would also work, I'm sure. There's actually also a site called the Orchid Mall that has an Unclassified Ads page. You could try posting there...

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, my condolences.

A lot of good ideas so far, another may be to donate them to Balboa Park as they display blooming orchids throughout their Botanical Building and have a greenhouse to house the orchids when not in bloom. If there are many Cattleyas, Dendrobiums or other temperature tolerant genus' then maybe a botanical garden with a tropical/subtropical section such as Quail Botanical Gardens where they can be mounted on trees. Searching for universities in the area with botanical programs may prove to be beneficial as well.

Thank you for the numerous suggestions. Donation would probably be our first choice . . . I love the idea of a school! I will also take note that the OSSC might be interested, though the plants are currently in San Diego. I will probably post on this matter again when it comes closer to the time that we will need to make a decision, although that could be any time, I'm afraid. However, its good to know that there are options, and people who can get me in contact with organizations that might be interested.
