Default what to call it?

hey ob,

so a question i have been pondering for a minute, so thought id ask. the paph venustum "album" as it was sold to us (labeled, with a tag from a reputable grower) has these black spots at the midvein of the petals near the base, and some tiny pigment spots along the superior edge of the petals. it was mentioned on another forum that it technically wasn't an album form because of those spots. so, what should this be called? is it better labeled as a flavum due to the yellow pouch and pigment presence?

follow up question, is it uncouth to change a label as it was sold to you?

second follow up, if we try and use it to breed, would it need to use the name it was sold to us, or can it be registered (possibly in the future) under a different name?

thanks for any input!!

It looks like an album to me…

If you know it’s not, and are absolutely certain, you may correct the label.

When breeding, the genus and species names are all that matter for registration. A x B, A album x B, A coloratum x B, etc. are all the same hybrid. That doesn’t mean folks don’t want to know what variety was used as a parent, but it has nothing to do with the registration.

howdy ray , thanks for the input!

the comment about its non-album status was from a member of st (i don't want to advertise other forums on here ), and so i just always assume their knowledge is greater than ours. we have no idea what it is! soooo, the label stays! less work and worry on our part as well.

and yeah, the part you mentioned about naming conventions does make a lot of sense in this case, and probly nobody gives a crap!

thanks again!

"albescens" is also a good waffle-word... "almost alba" I wouldn't change my tag, but you could use the term if you want to impress the know-it-all types.
