I got plexiglass cut to my measurements from Lowes for the shelves. Also I use extra light since I have North windows. I also got a bakers rack cheap off of craigslist. I use that too for plants. I like how they fold up flat and are easy to move.
I thought Orchids did best in North windows? Mine face North out of my sliders as well.

Mine do well but I have extra light for the catts and vanda types. Plus the sliders are big so you do get some good light, more than a windowsill. North windows have the least amount of light.
I use the same type of shelves (with the rollers, too, so I can easily slide the shelves for vacuuming). I have two shelves currently but will probably buy a third set for the 'little trees'. They are just perfect for hanging lights!
