Don't know if this happens in other folks cities, but in Portland folks leave furniture and stuff on street corners with "Free" signs.

This weekend, someone left a 4-foot, 5-shelf, heavy-duty, wire rack with wheels on the corner outside my apartment. It was pretty clean and in excellent condition.

I had been thinking about expanding my shelving and there it was for free! And given that I drive a Smart car a heck of a lot easier to get home.

I haven't quite worked out where everybody goes in the new layout, but I have a lot more room. I'll post some pics after I finish setting it all up!

I'm looking for a shelf to take the best advantage of my available space...but it has a cost (€€€).
So, my oppinion is that you're lucky and it can only be good!

rbarata -- I know, right? Good luck with finding something for your space.

The shelving was free, but how much will all the new orchids that I can stack and hang on it cost me? I think I almost have enough room to double my existing collection.

Some might say, "You don't have to fill up the shelves." As if...

I actually just ran into a similar problem. I started a new job and when I took the trash to the dumpster there were the shelves. Sheepishly, (new job remember), I go and ask if the shelves by the dumpster were for the trash. They said yes, so once again embarrassed, I ask if I can have them. Can we all shout - Yay! to dumpster diving at your new job. Now I am working on sanding/painting them. They were commercial chrome shelves that had started to rust slightly from being out in the weather. When done I will need to fill them, of course. What good would empty shelves be?

It was a great find. Remember, when the shelves are filled, you can hang baskets from the edges.

Wire shelves are great for hanging mounted plants in front too.

Optimist -- You used the Eames as orchid mounts, right?

The Bertoia chairs I got at a yard sale are for orchids, not the Eames. Only Bertoia allows the orchid roots to drain properly. Shheesh. Do I have to tell you everything?
