Windowsill greenhouse and new growth
Default Windowsill greenhouse and new growth

I went to ikea on a family trip intending to buy nothing and came back with a mini greenhouse... So I popped my smaller orchids into it with my humidifier. My poor Phal is hanging out by itself next to the greenhouse. I am also seeing the first signs of growth since I bought these three orchids which makes me so happy! I must be doing something right.

A new leaf for my Pleurothallis palliolata

New roots (which you can't see) for my Camaridium meleagris

And (I think?) a growing root for my Cymbidium erythrostylum

Looks beautiful, and already proving its worth!

The Phal is like the kid looking out the window at all the other kids playing.

I see a bottle in there...how do your humidifier works? Is it your own design?

Thank you estación seca! I was so happy to find something in there for my orchids, it made me feel better about not taking home any of the phals or dendros they had there. And aww, you're going to make me feel bad. When it loses the spikes it can join the other kids, haha.

rbarata, this was a gift from a friend of mine and it's korean in origin. It had actually been collecting dust until I realised I could use it for plants. The bottle acts as a reservoir for water and then the tank holds some and uses a fan to create mist, I believe. It's very simple, but it does the trick.

There are threads here on Orchid Board showing how people built large reservoirs for their ultrasonic humidifiers, so they didn't have to refill several times daily.

I have an Ikea tabletop greenhouse, too...along with two other, smaller greenhouses. They really help with my humidity and warmth (I have a little heating mat underneath).

I have this same greenhouse! Mine is stuffed full of minis and I added a wire across the back to allow more space for hanging mounts. I added a tiny fan and mist heavily every day. I also have moss on the floor to help hold humidity.

These are great for countertops, I wish I had room for another! Your orchids look very happy.

Just wait until I execute the plan that I've been mulling over. Refills? I ain't gonna need no stinking refills!

When I drive by yard sales I keep my eyes peeled for used aquaria. Then I buy glass cut to fit the top at the hardware store.
