Need help on care of Tulip orchid
Unhappy Need help on care of Tulip orchid

Hello all,

I need some help with care requirements of a tulip orchid ( I just bought it- 1st one )

I was so exciting to see my yellow tulip orchid at a show I attended that I just bought it without researching the care.

I got it home and found that the old roots were rotted pretty completely BUT the new growth has just started putting out roots.

I have the orchid in some damp sphagnum moss with leca pellets mixed in.

Today the 2 yellow flowers that are just ready to open up started to go brown at the tip of the bud. I put on a cool mist humidifier thinking the air was too dry (live in zone 5) hoping not to lose the buds. maybe with roots in bad shape the flowers are blasting?

Please help i am clueless on the requirements or this orchid besides "high humidity".

Welcome to Orchid Board

Just trying to clarify, because Tulip Orchid is the 'common name' and those vary across the world (a Ghost Orchid in the UK is something VERY different to a Ghost Orchid in the USA).

Is it a Anguloa like the one in this link? If so this link is actually care tips, I don't know this orchid so if that's what it is hopefully others can give tips. If it's something else then can you post pictures.

Anguloa (Tulip Orchids)

I think that does look like Anguloa, but I'm not an expert so hopefully someone will be able to confirm.

Hello Jules, you bought an Anguloa, most probably dubia or clowesii.
Anguloas are wonderful plants. However your plant lacks an efficient root system, so it is better for the plant not to put energy into flowers. It is better to form roots to nourish the new lead.
Anguloas are terrestrials with good appetite. Potting medium can consist of a mix of hydroponics or clay pellets, medium grade fir bark, sphagnum and Perlite.
Grow them a bit shaded in intermediate conditions with good air movement and cooler nights. Once roots are strong, a regular feeding schedule is beneficial.
You can find more information and links here with the search function. I used to link to Henry Oakleys website (a guide to Anguloa species and their natural hybrids), but now my Antivirus tool prompts alarm.
