Winter orchid room

Okay I grow all my orchids in a window sill, due to the fact that I am a broke college kid. I currently fill up saucers of hydroton, each day before I head out. This is how I am currently keeping some humidity for them.

Due to the heat and the shade on my porch I have them outside on a table hanging out.

But when winter hits they all have to go back inside to my grandmothers home where she has a large back room that we partially heat. We use propane, it sucks the humidity right out.

The room has a large set of sliding glass doors that face the west where they will get bright partially filtered light, there is a slight overhang over the doors.

How many humidifiers would I need to keep them at proper temp levels?

PS sooooo happy to have found this forum....FINALLY....because I feel windowsill growers definitely have some special issues....

Oh and I live in West Central Texas if that helps anybody, when it decides to get Cold it gets COLD and DRY...ugh

You might consider buying some clear shower curtains to make an enclosed area that will conserve heat and humidity, yet let in plenty of light. It won't be pretty, but it might make just enough difference. Good luck.

pfft. I will Be the only one back there so I don't care for pretty! LOL now how would I hang them????

There are lots of styles of mounting hardware for curtains. Check the Ikea website. If you're handy, you can get clear vinyl at a Walmart and make cut-to-length panels, but that might be more expensive than shower curtains. You might also consider making a frame from pvc and attaching panels of clear vinyl to made a greenhouse-type of area in the room.

Okay I may get those 3m and hooks and hook shower curtains that way. Or maybe even w cheap curtain rods and screws..

There is a YouTube video that shows you how to make a small greenhouse from inexpensive PVC piping. Search for "Build a Mini Greenhouse for Raised Beds". If you are handy, you can use the idea for the indoor room.

Key word if you are handy.....I am not in that capacity, and my brother works the oil fields. So its me and my mom.....the room is just really a junk room adition, so I think im going to use my heavy duty staple gun and staple them to the ceiling. then tear them down when it gets hot enough for them to sit outside again. the room is not finished out so it can take a lot of wear and tear...

o whoops!!! meaning the shower curtains!!! stapling them up not the orchids haha, just thought of how that sounded there!!!

Great thread! Why not just get command strip hooks to attach to the ceiling and hang the shower curtain from those on some metal shower curtain rings? No permanent damage to the ceiling that way, and you can still hang your curtain up.
