Second blooms for Phalaenopsis
Default Second blooms for Phalaenopsis

I have 2 orchids that have bloomed for the second time. One was originally periwinkle blue, the other was purple with white spots. BOTH have bloomed pure white on the second flowering. Is this common?

I think those orchids were colored and injected with dye for marketing purposes.
The second flowering cycle produced the real flower color and form.

It's not unheard of that NOID phals can change colour on second flowering.

I think especially if the nursery has used dye to create a colour in the flowers that the plant is sold with, you might get a surprise second time around.

Don't you have any pictures of first and second flowering? Would be interesting to see the change!

I do have a picture of the blue one (as it was losing its flowers and both of them now. They are on my phone and I will need to download them to my laptop. That's how I proved to myself that I was not losing my mind when the first one bloomed white!

I agree that you have two white Phalaenopsis orchids that were dyed blue and purple. I see them everywhere in grocery stores and in big box stores. I've seen blue, purple, and green dyed Phals. For the most part orchids don't come naturally in those bright blue and purple colors so they dye them. There have been others who have asked this same question. They didn't know that the plant was dyed when they got them. Usually they come with a tag saying they are dyed but I have seen some that don't. So you are not crazy! Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome! These definitely did not have a tag. I am new to the orchid-growing scene and thrilled to have this forum as a resource. I got mine to bloom again by trial and error (only killed one orchid in the process!) When the blue orchid bloomed again and was white, I SERIOUSLY thought I was losing my mind!!! I'm so thankful that I had a picture to prove that I wasn't!
