Hi all,
New member here....
Been trying to keep my orchids happy and thriving over a few years with the only light I have in my condo, eastern exposure morning light for almost 5-6 hours.
I had bought vandas in spike from both Florida and Hawaiian growers. They bloomed and were amazing but trying to keep them alive through the winter failed. I probably should have shipped them off to a Vanda winter camp in Florida!!!! Is the guy still offering that?
When I renovated my condo myself, all new moldings, casings and crown, I expanded the window ledge to allow more for plants!
Seems to be an ever changing selection of orchids of those the survived my care and light and those that did not! (Please note my other plants there...desert rose, buddha belly bamboo, air plants, burros tail and jade plants)
WISH I HAD A GREENHOUSE...or better yet a GEODESIC GROWING DOME (I helped a friend build his)
So enjoy my pics and love any comments...see ya

Hi...thanks...I'm not sure which ones they are except they have survived for years! I do not follow the usual recommendations of soaking for a period every so often, I have been successful just misting them every am with a very dilute solution of water and urea free orchid fertilizer and they are happy and making babies all the time!!!

Vandas are very difficult to keep alive in homes unless you are careful to water them every day.

Nice windowsill set-up! You have some nice looking 'non-orchid' plants, especially that super nice mount in the last photo!

As to Vandas, many people in the Netherlands grow them using the vase method. The idea is to place the plant is a very large vase, which helps keep humidity around the roots. Watering is done by filling the vase with water and then dumping it out. The advantage of this method is that daily watering isn't needed unless it gets quite hot. Though you'd eastern light would be challenging to get them to flower...

Thanks...yes I just gave up on the Vandas..I had a great daily watering schedule and the roots always looked great but just not enough light. At lease having bought them in spike I did have the bloom which were gorgeous that summer....
