Just curious...what do you have as rain that is so different from our rain?
It is in the teens 'F right now and I am guessing Michigan is not much warmer. I would not want plants to be traveling at this time unless there was a heat pack and good insulation. I am glad my Cattleya came last week while it was warmer.

The volume. The rest of the country gets in a day/week/month what we get in a whole year (South Bay). Fishmom probably gets twice/3x more than I do but that's still a fraction of what you get.

Sometimes it pours so hard in the desert the fish swim from my pond up onto the roof.

We are south of NWO. It is currently 12 degrees here. Hope they don't ship. Weather guesser said it should break temporarily next week. Then go back down.
Sorry, 9 degrees.

Here is an update, apparently there are many orders awaiting warmer temperatures. I called this morning and spoke to Kristen, she's a sweetheart, she apologized for the delay in shipping and plans to ship on Monday 9th. Temperatures are expected to be much better next week, fingers crossed and she will add a heat pack and send tracking info. She said their temperatures are in the teens today but only a dusting of snow.
I think after this plant arrives I'll hold off on any more ordering until spring, after all Al's is just a 30 min drive so I can always get my orchid fix.

Somehow, I find that difficult to believe. :|

So you guys have the lovely, beautiful weather and can plan to spend time outdoors...without getting eaten alive by mosquitoes or drenched? I think that is why most of us in Ohio daydream about moving to California.
We do get quite a bit of rain, sometimes enough to cause severe flooding. Drought here is a couple of weeks in a row without much rain (though usually a little). Right now, as it is too cold to rain, it is snowing. I have been shoveling snow off and on most of the day. It was raining all day yesterday and the day before...I kind of liked that better.

" I think that is why most of us in Ohio daydream about moving to California." MOST. I do not want to move there and my brother in law just moved to Utah from CA. When the big one hits, I want to be on solid ground.

An old Southerner like me would last all of 3 minutes in California. Or in Ohio, for that matter!

I hear the South is going to get some snow and ice...an Ohio experience. I hope it will miss where you live. Fingers crossed for you.
A few months ago, I read about the expected, overdue, 'Big One' and the tsunami that will follow. I imagine, though, that California is prepared for something like this. Still, I agree that I would not want to be there. I'd probably forget to bolt something down....
Pattywack, you are lucky to have Al's so close! I felt pretty lucky to get my new Cattleya unscathed from Hawaii last week and plan to wait until the cold is over, now. Al, though, is really great about holding orchids until it is safe to ship and he lines the box with insulation and, I think, uses a heat pack. That is after wrapping the orchids very well. He seems to treat every orchid he sells as his own.

We had a small amount of snow last night, nothing like we've had in the past. Seems we get the big snows in February. Last year we had two storms back to back of nearly 30 inches! Out here where we live everything shuts down for a couple of days. Our temperatures are in the 20's now. Next week it's supposed to warm up.
Leafmite, it's funny the way you describe Al, that is exactly the way he is too! Every plant is his own and he "knows" them, especially plants he has had a long while. He is an absolute character, I love going there and spending a few hours just looking at his plants and taking pictures. He has Bonsai to die for! He's grown those for years and years. I've bought 4 Neofinetia from him, at 50% off. He said he's been growing all of his Neos for a decade and he is selling off duplicates. I've picked up some very nice ones though Al acted like I was taking his children away. I love going, you should visit him if you have a chance.
