I felt like I got "Rock Star" treatment from Carmela's orchids. Because someone here recently got a big package in which they choose orchids, I started to think I would do that at some point too. However, I am quickly running out of room, and really do not need a dozen more huge orchids. I noticed on their web site that they had a special where they would choose 7 small to miniature orchids. I won't give you the price, (you can look it up on their web site) but if you consider that shipping Fed Ex from Hawaii is no cheap affair, the orchids were totally reasonable. (Shipping was free, but you know it was figured into the price).

Carmela's is a a class act. They actually contributed a great deal to me getting started in business.

I don't know if they still do, but twice a year they had a sale, any 10 plants for $100. At the time, they had a new hybrid, Dtps. Hybridizer's Dream, that was fuchsia with a white edge on the petals. They were $125 each. I ordered ten of them for $100, and they sold them to me! I turned around and resold most of them, and that basically gave me the "seed money" to begin buying a lot more plants for resale.

Their stuff is generally good, and sometimes great. It is just they have very persistent, chemical resistant thrips that were introduced into my collection. Sheldon himself said that he was embarrassed about the quality of Dendrobium he was growing because of thrips.

I have tried Bioneem, Botanigard, MET52, Kontos, Enstar, Conserve, Safari, and none of them seems to have a much of impact if used alone. Orthene, Overture, and Conserve with IGR seem to substantially reduce thrips populations.
