Smile Orchid Nurseries In The Five Boroughs of New York?

Hello orchid lovers!

I have one phal and it's not spiking (growing a new leaf instead) and that makes me sad. Sooooo, I wanted to buy a new orchid to make me feel better. I was wondering if anyone knows of any orchid nurseries in the five boroughs of New York. Preferably Brooklyn or Manhattan. Or just stores that sell orchids? Other than Home Depot, Trader Joes etc. Thank you very much in advance!

I don't think there are any nurseries in NYC although Botanical gardens in both Bronx and Brooklyn grow some orchids year around, mostly huge vandas and some other large specimens.
Then the one in the Bronx have annual orchid show around March when they also sell many orchids shipped in from elsewhere but these are such ripoffs.
lol

Have you been to the flower district at 28 st between 6 & 7 avenues?
There are a few stores that sell orchids of a few popular types and phals are sold any time of the year.
The price is about 35 I think.

Also, there is a place called Orchidman on 52 st along 10th avenue where they sell lots of orchids, mainly phals.
They also sell phals for about 35 each unless it is double spike, in which case, then they charge some more.

During the warmer months, a couple of vendors at the green market at Union Square carry some beautiful phals in bloom, and they are even cheaper there, although they have been slowly raising the price. used to be 20 for single spiked phal and 25 for double spike, but now it is 25 and 30 each.
Still, great deal and many of them come with a ID tag too! this was my main source of phals when I used to be crazy about phals.

I recommend Wednesday and Friday morning. Go there around or before 9 am if possible otherwise prettiest ones will be all sold.

Good luck!

I think Mount Prospect Orchids is located in Brooklyn, but I don't know if they allow on-site visits or just mailorder.

Such a shame there are no nurseries here.

Yeah, I figured both Botanical Gardens had some but that their prices would probably be inflated. I'm hoping to go to the NYBG Orchid Show though just to admire what they've got. Never been to one of their shows.

Nope, never been to the flower district or to Orchidman or to the green market at Union Square , but I'll definitely check those out in the future, probably when the weather warms up a bit. I just wish I had more room for orchids! Such limited space at the moment...

I actually ordered a paph online just a few hours ago (before reading this post - oops ). It's a paph acmodontum. And yes, it's a species (so possibly not the best for a beginner) and yes, it was quite expensive, and yes, the shipping was exorbitant (sigh), but I had my eye on it for months and was justifying it to myself all along. Apparently I convinced myself .

So since I just bought that, it may be a while before I check out those places in Manhattan, but it's definitely good to know about.

Thank you so much for all that info. I really appreciate it!

I think Marlow's orchids isn't too far out of New York City but, not living in the state, I have no idea. I met him at one of the Pittsburgh shows.

Manhattan-

Aside from NYCorchidman’s infos:
Chinatown plant stores: Garden City Flower Arts at 222 Centre St. between Canal and Grand; they not only have phals and oncidiums, but asian cymbidum species and sometimes dendrobium and neofinetia cultivars. Really nice folks, the only catch is plants aren't usually labelled.
Another store is Manhattan Florist at 87b Bayard between Mott and Mulberry; they're smaller and don't have as many orchids.
Plantworks on E. 4th st., and Plant Shed on W. 96th off Broadway, are two good indoor stores that will probably have orchids as well as unusual houseplants, but selection will likely be small.

Brooklyn-
Liberty Sunset Garden Center: down in Red Hook near Fairway (and in the same warehouse as Steve's Key Lime Pies). They have a huge outdoor nursery, but also a big indoor space in the warehouse, complete with indoor waterfall. Their selection is very limited, it's probably a good idea to call ahead to find out what's around, but it's such a cool space in a dramatic location that it's worth a visit

*If you're looking for a quick orchid fix, Trader Joe's has better quality plants than the big box stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn, though you'll find mostly phals, phal-type dendrobiums, and the occasional oncidium type.

Bronx:

The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx always carries orchids (seedlings not flowering types), and they have some great classic Cattleya plants and unusual hybrids during their big Spring Orchid Show, but expect to pay premium prices; the garden store is perhaps slanted toward the more well-heeled/informed visitors.

Wave Hill, also in the Bronx, is a smaller but beautiful public garden; I have seen a few orchids in their shop, but nothing you couldn't get elsewhere.

*I have not been to the Queens Botanical Garden yet this year or have known of anything in Staten Island (shame on me!) but I would guess they would have orchids there as well.

Yes, I found that place online, but based on the website at least, it looks like it's online orders only.

Never heard of it, so I looked it up on Google Maps. Looks preeeeeetty far, but I'll definitely keep it in mind if I'm ever on a road trip. Thank you!

This is all fantastic information and I've heard of none of these places aside from the botanical gardens, so thank you! You'd think having lived here all my life I'd have heard of some of these places . So excited to take a few days and explore all these locations!
