Once again, not happy with my German order.
Default Once again, not happy with my Schwerter Orchideenzucht order.

OK, hopefully the pics will load. I decided that since people were astounded that Vanda / Ascocenda - Orchideen und Orchideenzubehr der Schwerter Orchideenzucht would have sent me two Cattleyas whose roots consisted of compacted plugs of dead roots and sphagnum moss, I would give them another try, and so I put in an order for a couple of Vandas. One of them was a complete joke, with minimal roots, but worse than that, almost half the leaves were rotting. I'll try and load pics.

The joy of it is, that should I return this, the postage will nearly cost me what I paid for the plant. Is it salvageable or it is a write off? To my uneducated eye, it looks as tho it is only fit to be binned.

IMO, that plant is in unacceptable condition. This never should have been sent. They should reimburse you for both the plant and the shipping cost, if they want it back they should be responsible for those cost too. I would send these pictures to the company, with an explanation of what can be done to remedy this situation.

I honestly can't believe any reputable grower would send a plant in that condition.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Ditto what everyone else has stated; I too would send a series of photos and ask that the plant + shipping be credited back to my account. I believe that it is salvageable, but one should not have to expect to salvage something that was bought in good terms from a "reputable" firm. Just my 2p,
Adam

Well, I will give them this much credit. They have offered an instant refund for the plant. I don't expect a postal refund as The other two plants are OK.

What I don't like is their immediate response that the plant was damaged in transit. Hard to believe as the other two were not affected, and they were all in the same box, which was undamaged.

Anyway, They had the courtesy to respond instantly with a no quibble refund. That I do appreciate.

How would everybody suggest I treat it? I have a bottle of Physan, so would it be best to spray it with that,as some of the brown patches look as though they have fungal spores on them.

Also, what's people's best guess for the cause? Sunburn, bacterial attack or what?

WOW! Its a large plant that was put in a corner and neglected.
The plant is healthy with robust roots and it is blooming age and size.
You have to spray it with fungicide and hope the infestation will be stopped.
It was neglected and allowed to fester. The fungi infestation has spread majority of the leaves.
The ten topmost leaves are still not affected and the five bottom layers are salvageable.
Do not cut the leaves just see if the fungi are killed and you just have to bear with the damaged ugly leaves.
Hopefully it will give you beautiful fragrant blooms to compensate for the damaged leaves.

*I just got my Renanthera philippinensis from Sweden and a hybrid Vanda a couple of weeks ago. They were all healthy and robust with clean impeccable leaves, all in blooming age and size....and it was a steal!

Bud, have you a link to that firm please?

I have doused it in Physan and we shall see. If you think that that has impressive roots, you should see one of the others. The vase it is in is half a metre high, and it still isn't really tall enough.

Physan20 is just a disinfectant. But it might prevent the fungi from spreading. Better get an anti-fungal spray from your local garden supply since you have a really major infestation. Maybe a local pharmacy is selling it. Ebay have sellers that are already in Europe and can easily mail it.

Here is the Swedish seller's contact:

That Vanda in vase culture is absolutely magnificent....in the warmer months its best to hang it bare where t is located in the picture since your atmosphere is warm and humid with additional twice a day spray with water. It will be good for the plant. In the colder months put it back in the vase.
*the Phalaenopsis in that picture is in a very large pot....better find a smaller pot for it.

Just a thought.
I wish the title of this thread was just the vendor's name, instead of saying "not happy with German order".
sounds quite offensive to me.

Fair enough, I have edited it. It wasn't meant like that..

Bud, Thanks for the tips. I have an excellent fungicide to hand, so I will give it a dose. It's going to be one ugly plant, but I am disinclined to just throw it out.
Here we have a weird mix of weather, and it can be very drying indeed, so much so that it would make me very nervous of hanging it in the open air. On the worse days, the wind can feel like you opened the door on a fan assisted oven.

The vanda in the vase has been granted a seal of approval. This morning I saw a tree frog happily esconsed between the leaves.

The Phal is my guinea pig. It is a rescue plant, and not my best, so it get's to go into new locations to test them out. Again, winds are a problem here sometimes, and top heavy plants are at risk. That pot size is an experiment, as a friend claims great success using it.

So, what size would you go for please, and why?
