Lowes selling "exotic" orchids

Yup, many places have a guarantee for plants. OSH (Cal hardware chain) has a one year guarantee, I believe...

In December, I found a fabulously fragraced orchid at a retail nursery. It cost more than I care to spend on plants, especially for a type I am not familiar with how to grow - but I was intoxicated by the fragrance! So, I was extremely happy to learn that this place had a plant guarantee! Made me relax about trying this new one (which, btw, is doing fine so far!)

So, keep your receipts!

I still like buying orchids from Lowe's! Not from the clearance rack though, because my local Lowe's puts leafless phals that are unfortunate victims of crown rot on the clearance rock for a fantastic price of $5. Thanks, but no thanks. However, the baggie babies are nice, if you're lucky. Sometimes, they put species in bags with pictures of hybrids on them. There was one bag that had a picture of Blc Waianae Leopard or something like that, but inside was actually a C. amethystoglossa!

Funny that you should post this, I was just at my Lowe's today for actual hardware (building shelves for the backyard garden!), and I looked at the baggies and thought of this post. Today's choices were very meager.

But the ones I got... two months ago now... are still all bulking up and in general being green, healthy plants. Which is all I hoped for when I got them!

I should post pictures of my Dendrobium lindleyi, it is fully attached to the cork with its roots and may bloom this spring. I just have to remeber not to give it a drop of water during winter...

Yeah the same thing happened to me, there was one of those with the Waianae Leopard picture but it was also amethystoglossa. I bought it anyway though, as it was in amazing shape for one of those bag babies.

I love the Lowe's bag babies! I've gotten about 7 so far I think. Two were in really bad shape with rot and if I'd have known about the one year guarantee, I probably would not have bothered with them. But they are all n really good shape now and a B Nodosa Little Stars bloomed for me about 4 months after getting it.

I wonder if they sometimes get the tags inside the mesh bag mixed up? I have what the tag says is a BLC Windward Flare, but after seeing some recent pics of those plants, the one I bought from Lowe's is definitely NOT a BLC Windward Flare. Even my newb eyes can tell lol.

Home Depot is usually 90 days and no guarantee on seasonal plants like poinsettias etc. HD has some nice oncidiums and beallara's on occasion but they dont sell bag babies as far as I know. I havent ever seen any at HD anyway. I dont usually see orchids with names on them at HD either other than 'Orchid'.

They're definitely not the most accurate with labels/photos, but the incoming plants have been pretty healthy in my experience. Even by the time they get here to maine. If I'm really interested in buying I of course open the bag and inspect just in case.

The photos are just meant to be representative- not exactly what you'll get I think.

For years I have and will continue to buy the bag babies. Sometimes a surprisingly eclectic mix of offerings, they can be in decent shape IF you get them before the store fries them, and a decent price. Someone just posted that they found a schombo (don't know the species or hybrid)- try finding one elsewhere for $12, or a Den. spectabile. I've even seen them in bud/spike/bloom in their baggies.

I just saw bag babies at HD for the first time. Lowe's still hasn't gotten any in....
I'm on the hunt for little stars locally so I keep wishing
