Hello eveyone-
I know I have pitched Hilltop Orchids in Cloverdale, Indiana in the past as a place to go to see great Paphiopedilums and Phalaenopsis hybrids - they cross their own and have recently introduced a BLACK paph that kinds of took my breath - really dark one.
We also have a great micropropagator by the name of Erich Michels - he used to be the Lab and greenhouse manager at Hoosier Orchids before they went into retirement and has been trying to start his own business since.
Well, he and Dick at Hilltop have worked out a deal whereas Dick is carrying Erich's stock and selling it for him. This has increased the variety at Hilltop incredibly as Erich has been focusing on some really neat species for years and has a tremendous amount of mounted orchids ready to go. This has just occurred, so I don't know how long it will be before the stock goes online through Hilltop, but I bet it will be soon. If you are looking for an odd species, especially mini- to small sized ones, give them a call and see if they have it. Great prices and quality also.
Steve

I am not sure when it will be marketed. I happened to stop in a couple of months ago and spotted it from about 40 feet away - it was the first bloom and received some unworldly score, like 96 out of 100 points; he had just had it rated and was very proud. He allowed me to get really close and it was BLACK - I was amazed and he was just bursting with pride.
I haven't checked his website recently as he is only about 45 minutes away and I pass there when going to my parent's home - it's a good stop to stretch my legs.

You definitely should make the trip - give them a month or so to get the inventory straightened out as last week Erich had just brought hundreds of new ones in and they were not organized or otherwise in order, but many are for sale now, especially the mounts. I will stop today as I am going home to sit with my mother who is ill, and I will post pics later.
Dick appreciates any inquiries - he was a hobbyist for years who retired his 9 to 5 and made orchids his full-time job. I have spent many trips talking to him and he just loves to talk orc's. Be sure and pack a lunch as you can be there all day - not a huge operation, but just packed with plants. I would estimate that he has 700 or so Paph's on rolling benches, mostly his crosses, but all from highly rated parents, many in bloom. I purchased a great Tolumnia from him last time - Large blooms, mostly white with raspberry pink blotches- really eye catching. I was able to buy a large, really healthy plant in spike for $20.00; a lot of his orc's are priced 20 -30 dollars. He sold me Pescetorea that had about 15 - 20 starts, in bloom for $30.00; it is about 2 1/2 feet across and about as tall.
Very nice, family owned business. He does mail order and will sell cut stems (Phalaenopsis) for special orders.
Again, worth the trip, just bring plenty of money as there will probably be tons of plants you want.
