I got curious because I heard someone speak at a meeting - he mentioned that some growers in Hawaii push their orchids with N, resulting in a bigger plant faster, but a weaker plant overall, for having too little potassium and too much nitrogen while developing. His experience was that his Hawaiian orchids did great for a while, then had much higher rates of rot than his other orchids. I'm not experienced enough to comment one way or the other, but I'm hoping others might weigh in with their experience with orchids from Hawaii.

I've gotten a few plants from Hawaii - have had some problems with a couple, but I attribute that to my fault with culture. A couple I have not had any problems at all with. I don't have experience with this particular vendor.

I have bought many orchids from Hawaii and I've never had issues. I don't know the vendor your talking about though. I have visited two nurseries in Maui. Exotic Orchids of Maui and Haiku Maui Orchids. H & R Orchids is great too. When I visited Haiku Maui Orchids they told me they use Dyna-Gro Bloom all year long and told me to do the same. That was years ago though and I use MSU fertilizer. So that nursery doesn't or didn't use a higher N fertilizer.

I just pickup 2 new plants from H & R Nurseries, Cattleya aclandiae, Cattleya amethystoglossa, the owner came to our local society meeting. He brought our pre-orders and a large assortment of stock, he also provided the plant table. What a class act, he been hybridizing for 35 years, one of the best Hawaii growers. Our membership have been dealing with them for many years. I feel you can't go wrong with this grower.

I'll be the guinea pig for Kaleialoha. Couldn't not get their angraecum leonis. She and a friend, Phal. violacea, showed up yesterday. Very well packed, plants look healthy and gorgeous, bloom spike on Phal. intact. I'll keep you posted.
