Sophrolaelia Minipet X Laelia alaorii SVO Hybrid #2
Cattleya Minipet (syn. Sophrolaelia Minipet) X Laelia alaorii
SVO Very Select Coral Red Micro Mini- Cattleya Orchid Hybrid #2
Sunset Valley Orchids(SVO) have produced some of the finest hybrids. They are known for one-of-a-kind much selected seedlings. This was hand selected for its excellent bloom quality. And I was so lucky to have won this in an auction by Peter Lin from California an AOS judge and an orchid aficionado.
It has vibrant 2" coral red flat flowers. It has been selected for its nice smooth color, full shape and nice size. This is a hybrid with 3 species: S. coccinea (twice), L. pumila, and the very tiny L. alaorii. I would classify this as a micro-mini!
Why buy a hybrid seedling vs. a clone? As explained to me by our fellow member GlenGary: with a clone, you along with hundreds (perhaps thousands!) of people may have the same exact plant. With a seedling, you are the only one to have a unique flower and orchid plant.
Sunset Valley Orchids is a “Boutique” style nursery where we are dedicated to breeding superior orchid hybrids for the orchid enthusiast.
My plant arrived packed professionally and the buds were intact carefully covered with soft cotton gauze. There was no mechanical damage even if it travelled coast to coast.
Peter was very kind in giving me tips and general instructions on how to care for the plant and its culture.
The nursery is located in Southern California and has grown considerably over the last few years. They are plant breeders of award quality orchids with efforts that are focused in the development of new and interesting lines. They provide unique hybrids and species in several genera including; Cattleya, Catasetinae, Paphiopedilum, Australian Dendrobium, Sarcochilus, and Bulbophyllum. They are also the creator of the world renown "BLACK" orchid hybrid: Fredclarkeara After Dark! Which is the very first orchid acquisition in my collection before I even heard of SVO.
