I live in Honolulu and the Kawamoto orchid nursery is about a ten minute drive from my house. This is a bane and a blessing, as it's convenient (no shipping charges) but I buy way too much from them. I can't help myself!
I can attest that Kawamoto is a well-run and very friendly place. It's a family business and I like supporting local businesses. Their eBay selection is varied and always changing, and their prices are very reasonable. To be fair, yes, sometimes the roots on their plants aren't the healthiest, but I always repot and they do well.
Large orchid nurseries in general aren't going to devote the same care and attention to every single plant that hobbyists do. It's not feasible. Their job is to grow and turn over plants to market quickly and at low cost. If you want to buy those overpriced plants from private growers on eBay go ahead, but I'll stick with people like Kawamoto.

Am I an investigative journalist now? lol
They have a website, you know. Our History - KawamotoOrchids.com
It looks like that... several grow areas with benches topped with plants in various stages of growth. Not terribly exciting. I usually don't go into the growing areas, since they're mostly immature plants. If a plant is blooming-size they sell it. They have a display house where they put plants that are currently in bloom and for sale, since most people only like to buy blooming plants. Come to Oahu and take a tour!

I love them! the labiata Var Alba i got from them is stellar! the roots were only a little rotted at the very bottom of the basket but what potted orchid doesn't have slightly rotted roots at the bottom? the rest was a literal brick of roots!!! so many i couldn't count! the moss was broken down and had a couple of snails but the plant was in extremely good health!
And ive been through a couple of nightmare Scenarios myself and ive found that even great places have a bad apple in their tree every once in a while but over all the Company as a whole does some excellent work! maybe you just got a couple of those bad apples.
Also the labiata Var Rubra i picked up from them is a Stunning plant as well! its firmly rooted and well established just like the description said and the price is crazy!!!!!! ive bought only one plant from places and spent more than ive spent on these two plants! I bought them a week apart so i did not get the combined shipping! and i still spent less! you cant beat that! and great plants to boot!
Sam!
P.S. i wanna see more pics too!!!!

Glad to hear everyone else has had good luck with them.....
As far as bad apples go, I have got one to many bad apples from them. I'll hold on to my money for what I feel are better quality plant from the ones I like to buy from.

I just received my first ever orchid order from Kawamoto about 15 minutes ago and lemme say outstanding seller. The orchid was very well packed and the orchid is really really healthy. It already has a sheath starting I ordered a Blc Tsutung Beauty 'Taiyoung 3 Brothers' I'm definitely going to purchase from them from now on for all my future purchases

I placed an order with Kawamoto a couple of weeks ago. The shipping is really fast and email commo with Reid was fantastic. Unfortunately, the plants sent were not the healthiest, not that they were dead or dying, but for the prices paid, with shipping I thought they could be better/healthier. Well, I sent pics to them, and I was given a full refund, including shpg charges. I didn't expect that at all, but just lots of excuses. Can't have better customer svce than that.
