I just sent them the email and I also went over our project. Depending on what plant comes out the winner, they would certainly be a vendor I'd give consideration to.
I'm about to place an order with Hausermanns............but I need to know what "snow mold" is and how to get rid of it if mine shoud arrive with some.
Snow mold is what happens when the bark starts breaking down. It gets white and fuzzy. I always repot as soon as I get any orchid so I can see what it looks like underneath. Removing the plant from the old bark, cleaning it up and repotting in fresh medium works. I also give mine a spritz of regular Listerine to clean up any fungus that might be lurking.
It's upsetting to see this when I check the plants but it does not take away from the fact that the plants are beautiful. I'm just glad I go against the "rules" on repotting...for situations just like this
Sue I found that one of my orchids was clean of snow mold
and another had it more than the other.
Ick is right but my phals are of the utmost health!
Time for a repot job!
I finally got around to taking pics of my new chids from Hausermann. I got Phal. violacea x Phal. bellina. It's currently sporting two blooms, and it looks like the plant may be kicking out another spike. It definately doesn't look like a root. The other is Phal. equestris x self. It has two spikes on it. I just love it. It's so cute! They came packed very well. I do need to repot the violacea as I detect some mold in the media. I have coco soaking now. The scent on the violacea is unbelievable! BONUS!!
I repotted the violacea and the equestris today. The violacea was loaded with mold. Gave the roots a soak in Physan 20 before potting. The roots looked healthy enough. The equestris had the very beginnings of root rot. I clipped of the offending roots and repotted. I put both in one of those clear plastic pots with the slitted sides that was just slightly larger than the pot they came out of. I may have to give them a light mid week water as those pots seem to dry out much faster than regular pots.
