Hi again -
Last year, I got their list in mid-March. I rooted through my mailbox, and still have the 2008 listing, if you'd like a copy, email me privately. Prices for the things I wanted were all reasonable, and plants larger than expected. Of course, they have some very choice things for $800! Gawd, what if you got one, it bloomed, and was just...ordinary...
Anyway, lots of beautiful Brazilian species; shipping was not bad, though my credit card charged me some bloodsucking fee for "foreign" transaction, even though it was actually transacted in FL.
This years will certainly be different, but you can get an idea.

I bought several times and they are always kind and reliable. They have lots of seedlings (mainly Catt-alliance) with very good prices, and very expensive selected plants (already bloomed, they show the pic). In the web site they confirm Redlands this year ( Bela Vista Orchids )

Greetings - Bela Vista has just sent the 2009 listing for pre-orders at the Redlands.
If you request it via e-mail, you will surely receive the same. Some tempting offerings.
FWIW, the plants I received last year are all in vibrant health. Some have bloomed. The rest will bloom this year, or I kick roots and take names.

I was wondering something about their plants-
Many of them do not have pictures of blooms- and if they do are these plants grown from seed or meristem?
It would be nice to know what the flower might look like....
If anyone knows I'd love a heads up.

Cookie,

BVOrchids works only with seedlings. The "Special Plants" are selected plants (already bloomed) from their crosses.

It makes sense, that they would all be from seed- how about plants example :
purpurata("Rio do sul" x schusteriana) they have a picture of the flower on the website- that is just ONE of many outcomes for the cross, right?...
So essentially I get something better, possibly the same, or worse.... hmmm right?
I have emailed Antonio, but I have the patience of a mosquito, unfortunately...

Hi Cookie!

I'm sure the pic of the flower (e.g., "Rio do Sul" x schusteriana) shows not only a very good result for the cross, but the BEST they could obtain ('til now!). It's business, and they will show the best outcome possible! Even in highly selective breeding, I guess 90% of the outcomes will be equal or worst than the parents, 5% will be good and 5% more will be 'stunning'! If you want to enhance your chances, you must buy at least 10 seedlings of the same cross.
But I guess, when they show the best result of one cross, it become another type of advertising: "Well, if you want a orchid like this one, you will need to buy 10 or 20 seedlings from the same seed pod and wait a long time....but if have the money to buy 40 or 50 seedlings, you can buy a high selected plant from our collection, already bloomed and confirmed in its perfection"
It's business!

I was hoping the advertised flower- is what I would be getting, Unfortunately I can not afford more than maybe one or two of the same type...
I was always told the strongest of the seedlings are often the best outcome, then there is the average grower than the weaklings.
I honestly love purpuratas and it is very difficult to find good variations here in the U.S.
I have not yet heard from Antonio- so I dont know what to say as of this point.
The thing is if that flower is of an average outcome, then i am in good chance, if not then i am in trouble.
About the business field, so unfortunately I KNOW how it works- get people to lose their minds and empty the wallets lol

In my point of view, if you have money to buy just one seedling, you must buy it! You may be a lucky girl! This is the advantage of buying seedlings, unexpected things can happen! Let me tell you a real story: a friend of mine bought a set of one hundred NBS seedlings (Cattleya nobilior var. amaliae) in society with another guy; my friend had money for only 20 plants (ie, the other guy got 80); one year later, my friend showed me the best C nobilior that I saw in all my life amongst their plants! There was good flowers in both parts of the set, but that was certainly the best, and who got it was who bought less plants!

I know get how this works, it is the lottery, but with orchids. Often times the person that randomly buys one ticket wins and those who have bought many tickets in increasing their chances- win nothing. That might not be entirely true with orchids, but I get how it works.
I think I will try to get two seedlings of each and pray it works out well, if not then it will be an average plant.
I will hope for the best and the rest will follow through.
I wonder if he is selling divisions... hmmm...

There will be other vendors coming to the show from Brazil- Floralia (I hear they sometimes mislabel plants), also some others like Orquivalle from Colombia.
