I will say this...
If you should talk to someone from the office.
It's better to request Eric, but treat what he recommends to you with caution. Trust me on this one.
Be able to "sift through the detritus".

Boy, King, you've really given me something to think about. I was just about set to order from them. I can handle smaller plants that are packed tightly in moss because I routinely repot them after they arrive. But there's not much I can do with a poor root system
My order will probably be all phals,so I guess that would improve my chances, but I suppose I'll just have to check around at some other nurseries before I decide. I shouldn't have to take chances and if customer service is not a priority thing, they may not be what I'm looking for... Did you ever buy orchids from them when you were not an employee??

Yes, I was a customer before I was an employee.
I didn't mail order from them though. I hand picked my plants. Occasionally, I didn't have much of a choice.
I never dealt with Norman himself until I was an employee. As a customer, I always dealt with the more mild tempered Eric, his younger brother. Norman is very ill tempered and almost impossible to deal with. Eric is more willing to talk.
Like I implied, your chances with Phals fare much better when you're dealing with Norman's Orchids.

Thanks, King--I'm gonna check around! Help, I've ordered from Hausermann's before. I like them, but thought their supply was limited. I was like a kid in a candy store when I saw all that Norman's had to offer. Now I'll look at Hausermann's again (and Parkside and Big Leaf)...Thanks, you two!!

Try Oak Hill Gardens.
They've got some Phals.

Every plant I've ever received from Norman's (orchids.com) has been nice and healthy, great roots, all around good plants every time.
I also like the other nurseries mentioned here, but I've had "issues" with every one. I'm not saying it's their fault, but NO vendor can please everyone, all the time. If I posted a negative thread every time I got a so-so plant, there wouldn't be any vendors left from which to shop!

Royal, I just want to check and see if anybody else carries the particular orchids I want. If not, that about makes the decision for me!! I'll just take my chances and hope for the best!!
Thanks for your advice...
