Well sucks... but after all you can get a new one for a fraction of the price. everything dies sooner or later and sometimes when you order a plant it will not do well.

It is important to put it in perspective. Was just watching on the BBC website this guy that lost his house in Port au Prince but felt lucky to be alive...

after all we kill some lettuce or spinach or potatoes every day to sustain ourselves...

You really should try water culture! It's almost miraculous the way it can bring rootless catts (and others) back from the dead. You can get new roots started within a few weeks.

Does the base of the plant sit in water in water culture? Wonder why it doesn't rot? Do you add anything else to the water? I have rooted rosemary, and a few houseplants in a cup of water, but had not thought it would work for orchids!
Lori-Am very sad that icky is not doing well!!

Camille,
Ditto to Diane's questions. Might you post a picture as a guide? I am struggling with a C. loddigesii that got forced into a small box when it was shipped. It arrived in less than stellar condition . The root mass was...well...less than life sustaining. I'd be up for a shot at water culture, if it will save my fading beauty.

Lori,
Man, considering what icky had been through, you have done a heroic job trying to save her. Don't give up, though. I can attest to the return of green, and floral activities, even, when it looked as though all hope were lost! I have several that have survived the "black mushy death" and a couple that have come back from the dreaded "pot o' sticks" death, too!

I would try water culture.
It seems to work at starting new roots or new growth. It may be a setback but you may get some new leads,

I bought 3 small plants from a vendor that writes here -

a Lc, a Brassavola Little Stars and a Encyclia and tehy all came basically rootless.

The Lc leaves and PB dried and but i can see in water culture slight new growth. The Encyclia seems in a coma and teh Brassavola has 2 little small growths.

Vendor just offered a discount on the next order and actually never replied after that to my emails.

I wonder if I should leave feedback on the forum but i will resend him my last email.

My whole order was 23 $ - well Lori, I would not name orchids like they were a child and buy a new one. You can buy the same at S Barbara for 25 / 35 $ and since you have no issues spending a few 100s basically you could get a new healthy plant that will bloom for a negligible amount. teh one you have may make it in water culture. maybe not...
But as I said when you look at the people in Haiti that just died in a quake it is important to put everything in the right perspective.
Actually now the weather is in the 40s so if you buy something from California or Hawaii should make it no prob.

then dont have the carrier leave the package at yr doorstep but be home or go to the carrier to pick it up
