Oak Hill Gardens (oakhillgardens.com, I believe) in the NW suburbs of chicago has ghost orchids, and they are inexpensive.

Lots of orchids do well in terrariums...

A particularly satisfying combination, if you ask me...

If you are just starting out though, be a bit conservative. Ask a lot of questions first.

Check out our sponsors

For plants:
I'm partial to Andy's for minis, Oak Hill for just about anything and Littlefrog Farm when I feel like treating myself nice

We'll be ordering from Parkside Orchids for our project and I hear good things about them too.

For supplies:
check out Welcome to First Rays Orchids for some great information on S/H culture and all the supplies you need for it.
I've also ordered from https://shop.greenbarnorchid.com/splashPage.hg and just placed an order from Gardening Warehouse Direct . They've got some very appealing pricing

CB977's post was also from 2007. I think you saw this thread bumped up due to a spammer that added a post on the end of the thread today. It appears the spammer and spam post has already been nuked.

You should visit Orchids by Hausermann in Villa Park, Il.. It looks like they wouldn't be far from you. They're a large operation with quality orchids. For paphs and phrags I'd say Piping Rock Orchids. For phals I like Big Leaf Orchids or Norman's Orchids at Orchids.com. For cattleyas I like Carmela's or Carter and Holmes. For mini-cattleyas I like Gold Country Orchids, Marble Branch Farms or Sunset Valley Orchids. For growing media I like Repotme.com. For fertilizers I like Tindara's or Amazon.com.

One word of warning. If you buy online, I highly recommend that you buy blooming size plants. Many growers, including the ones I've mentioned, sell seedlings that can be several years from blooming. The online catalogs will usually say what size the plant is. I've bought seedlings that have taken 4 years to get to blooming size. I recommend spending the extra money for blooming size orchids.
