Hourai Orchids Kuala Lumpur Malaysa
Last Friday I received my order from Hourai Orchids and I am very happy with their service, plants and flasks. This is the third time I have purchased from them. I have ordered mother flasks and replates and plants. The deflasked plants arrive free of media and sealed inside a sterile bag that is heat sealed and then placed into another sterile bag and that is also heat sealed. I have replated these seedlings with very good results and no contamination. The plants arrived very neatly wrapped and in great shape for having traveled so far. One of the Phals I ordered even came with buds. I also feel that the charges for Cites and Phytosanitary certificates are quite resonable compared to other quotes I have received. Hourai Orchids do not have a web site at this time but they can be reached at seishi@tm.net.my If anyone is interested, I can copy in their flask and plant list so that you can get a feel for what they have. Out of all the plants I have ordered, I think that I am the most excited about the Phal appendiculata that I have been looking to get for a long time.

Wow, you are brave. I would not have the courage to place an order like that. I'm surprised that you have buds which did not blast in shipping. Did they have plants which are not available here?
and congratulations on your new purchase.

Hi Grandma, Up until about four years ago, I was purchasing orchids mostly from local vendors or at the Chicagoland Orchid Festival. I took a liking to species and was always looking for something unusual. I set my sites on and orchid and I could only find it in flask in Australia. Well, you can't just order one flask because of the cost of certificates and shipping so I added to the order. While waiting for the shippment, I read up on flasking and made a glove box to reflask the plants. That first time was a little rough but almost all of the flasks survived. Then I was hooked. The advantage to buying flasks is that for the price of a blooming plant, you can get anywhere from 12 to 50 plants. With that many, you can try diff potting mixes, mounts and lighting to see what works best. You even have some to share. I have also purchased seeds from the Orchid Seedbank and have finally seen germination. So after this long response, I would have to say that you can find orchids from vendors around the world that are not available in the US and you can grow orchids from seed that aren't commonly available. I have really enjoyed communicating with people from far away places that I will never be able to see and sharing a love of orchids.

Hello John,
I note this thread is a few years old, but I am going to Kuala Lumpur next month and would like to bring some flasks home. Do you know if Hourai Orchids is still operating in KL. I have been searching and can only find a Selangor address.

Thank you for the info, John! How long was the travel time for plants (with which carrier)? If you don't mind, can you tell us about the approximate shipping cost?

Hi Leah
Only just saw this, not sure if this will get to u before your trip, but Selangor is a state in Malaysia, and KL is a city/metropolitan area within Selangor. Kinda like Melbourne / Victoria.

Kuala Lumpur
Thanks for replying John, but yes I have been already. I found a good nursery called Lum Chin Orchid Garden. It is only 20 minutes drive from the CBD (depending on traffic) and the people were really nice. Spoke good english which is handy I paid about AUD$7 per flask. I haven't been a member long enough to post photos, so will keep them for later.
