VAT and taxation in general vary (literally) all over the map.

I ship KelpMax to a retail distributor in Canada, he pays a VAT tax on the product and the shipping cost!

For online sales in the US, if your gross sales to any other state reaches $40k, you must collect their sales tax and submit it to that state. Otherwise, you just have to do so for the sales to residents of your own state.

In Pennsylvania, that was easy as it’s a uniform tax. Here in North Carolina, I must track and apply the tax individually for each of the 100 counties, applying the (common) state sales tax, the variable county tax, and in some cases, a transportation tax, as well.

I'm still battling with myself whether or not i should just take it as an adult and order what i originally wanted but i cannot by any means justify this new pricepoint to myself. In short, they don't. They only care about receiving as much revenue as possible without considering the effect on the economy or the individuals being taxed.

Laws are written by lobbyists for the companies that will benefit from the laws. Businesses can pay Amazon or other companies for Web site plugins that look up and add the correct taxes.
