This link from DEFRA explains what non-UK traders have to go through - including the costs. All the export permit stuff is additional.
Apply for CITES permits and certificates to move or trade endangered species - GOV.UK

That is just crazy!

What the European vendors should do is to do pre-paid preorders only so that they are not stuck paying to take orchids home. Or maybe the orchid shows can get sponsors to help mitigate the costs involved for the European vendors. Vendors only come if they can make a profit...if they come to shows and take a financial hit, they will not return.

I think people overestimate the influence the UK has, honestly it's not worth the hassle when they have hundreds of millions of potential customers in the rest of Europe

I sense an opportunity for new UK nurseries.

The link above in this thread is for orchid species. CITES does not apply to artificial hybrids.

Also see Importing and exporting plants and plant products - GOV.UK

But everything else still applies to them, ALL plant matter basically. You need a phytosanitary certificate, which is bound by some very undefined requirements.

These all need to have a checking station basically, who also needs to have some undefined requirements.

"An operator who wants to act as a place of destination for physical inspections on EU regulated goods from 1 January 2021 must meet certain requirements."

This is still phase 1, at the end of the year we go to phase to which changes everything once again. I don't wish to be political, but our government are petty and vindictive. They could have simply stayed with the free trade agreement we had which never caused problems.

Do you know your MP? That often helps a lot in the US.

Makes no difference here. I wrote to them for years about opposing Brexit and recieved no replies. Even if they take it to parliament, parliament wouldn't do anything about it, even if Covid wasn't a thing

It is a long running argument which the Orchid world has had with DEFRA that they apply CITES to species AND hybrids.
A couple of years ago I tried importing from another country and I have to say that I gave up because the authorities here were not just unhelpful but they were obstructive. Whether they did not want a private individual importing plants or what, I gave up in frustration after a few months.
