When it comes to Vandas, most growing is done in Thailand. It is very common there, to put 3 small plants together in one basket. However, when they are eventually sold, all 3 should be either BS or NBS.
When it comes to Cattleyas (and to a lesser extent Paphiopedilums), unless the flasking was done very carefully (spacing the protocorns well apart), it is very common that some of the tiny seedlings stick together.
It takes too long to try to separate them, so the norm is that anything healthy goes into a cell in a plug tray, whether there is 1, 2 or even 3 seedlings. Down the road, it is too time consuming to try to separate them - unless they grow apart on their own.
Having said that, a reputable seller should still base his/her description on the size (height) of the plant(s) in the pot, and not on the number of pseudobulbs in the pot.

I have had this happen. Twice, I think, the orchids were purposely put together to look like a larger one and sold as such (I won't mention the names of the vendors, either, but they are not my usual ones) but the rest of the time, I think it was due to hasty re-potting because the orchids were seedlings of good quality and price and, as a vendor, I would not have wanted to sell the two of them for the price of one.
In either case, I don't complain because, really, you are getting more orchids and, if you are can be patient, the size doesn't really matter, does it?

Funny thing, you know that thread about my NoID Cattleya that was supposed to be perci, but wasn't that we've been talking about for a few days? That was actually supposed to be a blooming size plant, and it looked like one in the picture, but when I got it, I realized that it was two younger plants in the same pot, so I actually have two of them now. The other one has never bloomed, even though it is actually the larger plant, but I assume it is the same one. It has the same growth habit and general appearance (shape and size of pseudobulbs and leaves, etc). I don't know why it has not bloomed while the smaller one has, but it has two big new growths coming along nicely, and I won't be surprised if it blooms from those, and I expect the blooms to be the same as the other plant that was in that pot.
But I have to say, I feel a little deceived on two accounts now by this plant. This merchant is notorious for his [shenanigans], which I was not aware of when I bought the plant, but I know now. But not only was I sold the wrong plant, I was also sold two small plants represented as a blooming size plant, when in fact it took about two years to grow them up to blooming size. But I will admit that I wasn't upset about the two smaller plants thing until I realized it wasn't even the right plant. I guess I'm willing to accept one little lie, but two little lies is just distastefully brazen, and I just won't have any of that.

Then I have portayed my point perfectly. Orchid people are the opposite of cool lol, that is one thing I have learnt from this forum.
Orchid people constantly argue and bicker over irrelevant things when the hobby actually gives us great joy.
To be an orchid lover means spending a lot of time caring for plants.
Cool people play football.
Glad I could bring my point across as well as I'd hoped

What football forum do you know that blocks people?
Here it happens for just pointing out orchid growers are not cool.

Football like soccer or like football?
Act like an ass on either forum and you will be asked not too
Has nothing to do with cool either. That’s a random and subjective term based on the individual judging and their cultural and regional biases.
I play both, futbol and football. As well as lacrosse, basketball and ultimate frisbee. There are a lot of not cool people who do all of those things.
The only person who is either arguing or complaining in this thread is you
I have seen far better behavior on hunting and spearfishing forums.
Go and enjoy your plants, friend.

Aaaaand here we go again KingKong. Aren't you tired of this yet?
All blockers are football players, but not all football players are blockers. Most people who take time to be on an orchid forum are interested in talking orchids, but definitely not all orchid growers are cool. Thank you for being a perfect example of the latter.
Now knock it off. Talk orchids or take a hike, or go back under the bridge. [Said in my Billie Goat Gruff voice, as WaterWitchin and not a moderator].

And so sorry my friend DC for the highjacker... I'm now closing this thread. Not gonna play the game. Can always take it up again elsewhere. [Moderator Voice]
