My vanda in glass lamp/ vase

so I just ordered 2-3 vandas, my birthday is next week so Im rewarding myself! I will also be getting a humidifier and some superthrive!! hahah seems more like a birthday present for the orchids than myself :P ....
either way, I need to get plastic vases or glass ones this weekend before the plants get to me.... I wonder where I should go find some decent looking cheap ones... hmmm

Try looking in Phoenix. And don't forget something that is stable. These plants do grow and one would hate to see it fall over.

As a matter of fact, many people use vases for their luck bamboo. This kind of vase would be ideal.

thanks charles, I'll definitely head out to IKEA and a few other places where they sell lucky bamboo - good call! I hope I find what Im looking for, I think with a humidifier, I hope my vandas will be okay!

Go girl! Buying orchids makes you feel good!
Just a tip about vases. Make sure you buy with the opening near the size of your basket, you will have to adjust your basket to fit.
Try looking in the candle section for glass lamps.
I bought another lamp the other day from a $2 store, it is simiar to the one I have now ($12.50), not a bad deal.
Now I have to find another vanda for my new lamp!

This is the Vanda after 2 weeks living in a vase.

Min temp: 16 C, max temp: 25 C, humidity in room: average 60-70%, Ventilation: ceiling fan, or the great outdoors. Misting: maybe once a day, soaking: once a week (30mins).

The roots are looking really good, most have green tips, and showing signs of new growth.

One lower leaf has turned yellow. Is this an indication of an unhappy vanda?

What do all the vanda experts think?

Should I continue or abort the experiment?

If the roots are looking good, I would keep with it. From comparing your first photos to this one, the roots in this one look drier, but that could just be the photograph. In my experience (i.e NOT with vandas!), happy roots make a happy plant, so if you're getting firm white roots and new root growth, the shedding of a leaf could just be the plants way of adjusting to the new environment. Any sign of new growth on the top?

On closer inspection the older leaves are a bit wrinkled and leathery.
I think I am under-watering.

Yes, keep going! The more people trying to grow Vands in less than ideal conditions the better. As in the more we share, the better we can become at growing indoor Vandas and the like.

I think the key is good root growth, and growth at the top. shedding leaves usually means it's re-focusing it's energy into it's new environment, and cross our fingers will start fresh.

I am in the same situation just putting mine in vases, well, plastic pots, in 65-75% humidity, good light, and we shall see! so far, the big vandas/asc. have kept going, but it hasn't been long enough for mine to really tell me whether they're happy or not. The little asc. I have are on the edge of being unhappy in their previous semi-hydro situation, so new I'm trying the vase situation, and we'll see! Good luck, and thanks for sharing. keep us updated, I'll try and grab some shots too.

Some places you might look for inexpensive glass containers:
Walmart....craft department
Any craft store.......surprising what people use these for
Last week the TJ Max store in my area had a great selection of clear glass vases......just about any size/shape you could think of

My vanda in the vase has new root growth (approx. 5mm), and some leaf growth too!
It is looking happier after some adjusting to its new environment.
I am quite excited!
So far I have 2 vandas. One in the vase and another in a small bucket (similar kind of set up as the vase).
I have been watering (soaking) it every day, since it is getting warm here!
I'm thinking... more vandas!!!!
I will try to post pics tomorrow.
