Renanthera monachica with red/purple leaves
Default Renanthera monachica with red/purple leaves

My Renanthera monachica arived yesterday, and I’m a little concerned.

The majority of the leaves has some red/purple especially on the older leaves, but the leaves also have it in stripes. ( Theres also some wrinkling in the leaves I’m asuming from dehydration and some snail bites by the look of it)

What I’ve come to understand is that Renantheras love bright light, and the
is just an indicator of getting ample light. but I’ve never seen it this way before.

Should I be concerned

What are you feeding it - formula, concentration, and frequency.

Honestly Ray, I just got it Yesterday in the mail from Andy’s Orchids. I’m not sure their regiment, but I know he’s in SoCal so I’m assuming it gets a lot of heat and light.

My original plan for the orchid was to take it off the mount and put it into SH. My normal routine is misting daily since my humidity is low and I fertilize weekly with a quarter strength of a urea free 20 10 20 with trace minerals and my plants are all responding well to it.

I have found that they like their light dappled, not intense. Having spend quite a bit of time at Andy's, I guarantee that the light at its brightest is dappled, not blazing. "Warm" would be greenhouse temperatures. The tag will give lots if information with regard to both temperature and light. This one has been grown near the upper range of its light requirement (hence the "suntan") But this is a red flower, and would also tend to have anthocyanin in the leaves, so the purple is normal. If the tag says "BR" then it's dappled sun or bright shade.

That’s really good to know. My main concern was how the leaves had perfects stripes running across them, so I instantly thought it was sick! But I suppose if it’s getring dappled light then it’s possible the rest of the leaves were just consistently in shade.

Andy's greenhouse is stuffed. So it very likely was shaded by something else, and got whatever light got around whatever was above it.

I missed the "just got it" part.

I concur with Roberta.
