Ascocenda leaf spots

Yet another of my new additions that seem to be suffering from my ignorance. It's in a mesh basket with an inch of LECA... gets dunked twice a day just up to top of roots. Misted and fan blowing, at about 3,000 FC.

Is this from misting, or too much light? I thought they could handle a lot of heat and light...?

Why do they get fan blowing?

I have no idea what it is. I've never seen anything like it before.

For air movement. The grow area has 2 small fans in it - constant breeze, they all seem to like it as far as I can tell.

I'm all for nice breezy orchids, they do love the fanning!
Looks like your 'chids is geting alot of light - hence those spots. I wouldn't change anything

Probably just light spots, nothing to worry about, I have much more significant spots on some of mine. Those seem so small I would consider it the plant just adjusting to the new conditions. If they continue or get worse, move it to a shadier location. But as long as the plant is growing happy, a few freckles isn't anything to worry about.

I agree, many have those spots, including mine. I think that is a normal occurrence.

I've looked at the pic and I think there is a fungal problem. One bottom leaf in the pic shows some different markings like it is withering. What are the roots like?? It seems that the plant is suffering from something.
I think you might have a problem with the source your plants are coming from or they don't like your conditions.

Or he's not getting enough water and the plant is using moisture from the bottom leaves.

However, I have not had any luck with vandaceous species in leca, I find that the roots stay too wet and then mold and suffocate because they can not take in moisture.

Check your roots, make sure they are firm and plump, and not moldy... If the spots are from a change in lighting, it's understandeable, if your bottom leaves are shrivelling up, that may be another issue all together. But honestly, once they are water deprived, they never "rehydrate" so he/she could have received the plant that way.

Just re read the culture given, it could be too much moisture. The plants aren't drying out enough maybe. I grow my Vandas etc in pots coz I have trouble keeping up the humidity in summer but I only water them once a day in the morning and fine mist them only if the day is extremely hot. Don't think the fans are doing any good either.

I have 20+ ascon. and they are all put in hanging wooden/plastic baskets. They like high light levels, good air circulation (fans are good), and watered every day in summer and every 3-4 days in winter. They love the heat but growth is slowed when cold. I don't know what LECA is but I would suggest you take out and let the roots hang freely. (sometime I put a little charcoal in basket). Because they had no medium, they are heavy feeders in the growing cycle (spring/summer). You don't say where you live as that makes a big difference. Northerners have a more difficult time growing them than we do here in the south with high humidity. I don't the little spots are to worry about if the other elements are met. Light, warmth, water....Good luck with yours.
