R. Bangkok Sunset -- light requirements?
Default R. Bangkok Sunset -- light requirements?

Want to buy a R. Bangkok Sunset, or maybe one of the crosses with V Wilas that Motes has. Have read these do not require as much light as larger Vandas, but how much do they require? I put my orchids outside in summer where they can store up light, but winters here (upstate NY) are gray and even the south window gets only intermediate light at best, often less. Would love to have some guidance on this!

What a coincidence. Mine just arrived last wk. Would never have gotten a Vanda until I read of vase culture here. Found a deep clear vase I had and managed to make a crude chopstick device to hold the pot level with neck of vase while just tips of a few roots sit in a minute amt of water with some intermittent spraying. Have it under 4ft 4T5 light fixture. So far so good. Came with a spike too!

Perreiraara (Prra.), syn. Rhynchorides or Rhrds.

Orchidwiz says: "Grow this hybrid in bright indirect light conditions. It may be tolerant of shaded conditions."

But what is bright indirect light, in foot candles? In the summer I can provide ample light outside, but in winter the light averages less than 1000 FC. Varies from place to place and throughout the day, but is never "bright." Do orchids store up light in summer that helps them get through a low light winter?

Honestly, I don't know. Do you grow Catts? Most of them have the same requirement.

I don't think it works like that, at least to your orchid. Light is an important/essential factor in the production process of energy which is partially consumed and the rest is stored, usually in pbulbs. As this hybrid doesn't have pbulbs (I think), I really don't know how it stores its energy.
Let the experts talk...
