This is our first vanda to bloom ever . We have always been told that we would never be able to grow vanda types successfully here in Missouri. Not enough light, not warm enough long enough, not humid enough during the winter months. Went against the odds 18 months ago and bought 7 vandas from Carmela's. Still have 6 of them. Four show real promise, hoping that the other three will bloom soon.
I took the plunge when I saw jcec1 could bloom them on a windowsill in London.
Not even London, but, cloudier and cooler West of Scotland
There is definitely a misconception about Vandas needing sun beating down on them. I grow mine as stated on a windowsill with no supplemental lighting, and they do just fine.
There used to be a nursery that specialized in Vandas, Marylin Mirro in New York State. And Hausermann has them in the Chicago area. So no surprise that they should grow in Missouri. Still, Congrats. Nice dark color!
